Get ready, “Power Book II: Ghost” fans: season four is going to be a wild ride. Starz announced that the hit spin-off got the green light for yet another season on Jan. 30, just weeks before its season three premiere. “The high-octane drama of ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ continues to resonate with our viewers and we’re thrilled to get season four production underway ahead of our season three debut,” said Kathryn Busby, president of original programming for Starz, in a statement.
The third season of “Power Book II” premiered on March 17, picking up on the dramatic cliffhangers from the season two finale that sent fans spiraling last year. It delivered on its promise of “new twists and new turns,” wrapping up on May 26 with a whirlwind finale that teased a full-out war between Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.), Brayden (Gianni Paolo), Effie (Alix Lapri), and the Tejadas — Monet (Mary J. Blige), Cane (Woody McClain), Dru (Lovell Adams-Gray), and Diana (LaToya Tonodeo). The season four setup is eerily reminiscent of the spin-off’s parent series.
Though production for many TV favorites was thrown off due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes (which commenced on May 2 and July 14, respectively), Rainey Jr. and Paolo recently told POPSUGAR that “Ghost”‘s fourth season has already been filmed. “We finished two days before the [actors’] strike commenced,” Paolo shared, while Rainey Jr. confirmed, “Season four is done. In the books.”
There’s even more good news regarding season four — a familiar, handsome face is joining the cast. Busby added in her renewal statement, “It’s clear our fans are ready to devour more of this explosive series and we look forward to having Michael [Ealy] join our incredible cast.”
That’s right, the “Reasonable Doubt” star has been tapped for a major regular role as Detective Don Carter, “a rising NYPD officer who was on track to become police commissioner until his wife was killed in a crossfire between rival drug gangs.” According to Starz, Ealy’s Don will trade in his suit and tie for a Kevlar vest as the leader of an elite NYPD drug task force. Though it’s unclear who he’ll have run-ins with in season four, Tariq, Brayden, and the Tejadas are likely on his list.
Showrunner Brett Mahoney exclusively teased a tiny detail to POPSUGAR about season four’s theme on April 11. “Well, I will tell you that the theme for season three was betrayal. The theme in four is revenge,” he said.
The question of which “Ghost” characters will be seeking revenge remains a mystery for now, though the impending street war is a big clue. Ahead, find out everything else we know about “Ghost” season four.
“Power Book II: Ghost” Season 4 Cast
Obviously, Rainey Jr. and Paolo will return to reprise their roles. Lapri is likely returning as well. Fans can probably expect Blige, Tonodeo, and Adams-Gray to be among the returning cast, too, though the fate of McClain’s Cane has many wondering if his character survived season three’s finale shoot-out. So far, Ealy is the only newcomer who’s been announced, so viewers will have to wait and see how the rest of the cast shapes out.
“Power Book II: Ghost” Season 4 Plot
Season three’s finale opened a whole new can of worms, but the street war between Tariq, Brayden, Effie, and the Tejadas will definitely be a main plot point. However, it’s unclear who will come out on top as each side is fighting to become Noma’s New York distributor. There’s also the attempted murder of Monet by the Tejada kids (and Tariq), which will surely cause more problems in season four. And of course, Tariq is still doing everything he can to avoid his father’s fate while seemingly stepping right into his shoes. As you can see, the season four plotlines are endless.
“Power Book II: Ghost” Season 4 Release Date
Starz has yet to tease a release date for season four, but fans can theorize when it may arrive based on past installments. Season three finished filming around July 2022 and aired eight months later. If Starz follows a similar rollout schedule for season four, in light of the strikes, it could premiere sometime in the spring or summer.
