The Plastics are back together and ready to make “fetch” (finally) happen. Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert, and several other “Mean Girls” stars reunited for a new Walmart ad campaign, and there’s a 30 percent chance we’re already freaking out. To promote the retailer’s upcoming Black Friday discounts, the cast teamed up to share what their characters are up to nearly 20 years after first gracing our screens. “At North Shore, some things never change,” Lohan narrates in the commercial’s opening scene. “On Wednesdays, we still wear pink, but now, we shop Walmart Black Friday deals.”
Lohan’s Cady Heron appears as the high school’s guidance counselor, while Seyfried’s Karen Smith is a weather reporter (duh) and Chabert’s Gretchen Wieners is mom to the new Plastics head honcho. Rachel McAdams sadly doesn’t appear as Regina George, but a few other surprising cameos make up for it. Rajiv Surendra, aka Mathletes ringleader Kevin Gnapoor, pops up to repeat one of his most memorable lines, “Don’t let the haters stop you from doing your thang.” Daniel Franzese’s Damian Leigh makes an appearance to run the winter talent show, which features a “Jingle Bell Rock” performance, of course. Hell, even Missy Elliott, whose track “Pass That Dutch” is featured in “Mean Girls,” shows up to re-create the gym scene with a giant chalkboard.
Creatively speaking, the ad is a marketing masterpiece. Pretty much every famous “Mean Girls” quote is squeezed in and tweaked to fit the Black Friday theme. “I saw Miss Heron buy Apple AirPods and Legos, so I bought Apple AirPods and Legos,” one student says in a crowded hallway. We can’t help but think about the logistics required to bring the video to life . . . How much money did Walmart shell out for this? How long did it take to coordinate everyone’s busy schedules? Regardless of the answers, we’re thrilled to see most of the gang back together, even if it is in the name of sponcon.
The nostalgia doesn’t stop there. A new campaign video will drop when Walmart’s Black Friday deals launch online Nov. 8, with additional videos of the cast dropping every subsequent Wednesday in November, plus on Cyber Monday. How grool is that? We’ve seen members of the “Mean Girls” cast reunite plenty of times since the movie’s 2004 debut, but never quite on this scale and all together in person. With the movie’s 20th anniversary taking place next April and the “Mean Girls” musical movie hitting theaters in January, the timing couldn’t be more perfect.
